IRON INFUSIONS

Iron is a very important mineral for the body. It is used in many vital processes including helping deficiency is a very common problem. Iron deficiency can present in many ways. The most common symptoms are:

  • Tiredness

  • Dizziness

  • Difficulty thinking

  • Appearing pale

  • Breathlessness

Iron deficiency is more common in women, people with poor diets, vegetarians, vegans, people with chronic diseases that affect iron absorption (eg. coeliac disease), people who have had surgerys to the bowel or stomach, and people on certain medications that affect iron absorption.

Mild iron deficiency can often be treated with oral iron supplementation (Iron tablets). Some times the iron deficiency is more severe or people can have side effects from oral iron and then an iron infusion can be very helpful. 

Iron infusions are given through an intravenous (IV) line directly into the blood stream. They are generally well tolerated, however, your doctor will discuss the procedure and possible side effects with you. As side effects are relatively uncommon these can be safely administered in our clinic. An iron infusion typically takes about 30minutes and you will be supervised by a nurse during this time.

There are certain reasons not to have an iron infusion and your doctor will determine if this is the right treatment for you.
